What is the best website platform for a small local business?

There is no best platform, only a best fit. The decision comes down to whether you are selling products, how much you want to control, and who maintains the site after launch.

Short answer

For a service business that needs content and local SEO, WordPress is usually the right call. For selling physical products, Shopify is hard to beat. For a small, simple site the owner wants to edit personally with minimal maintenance, Squarespace is the honest recommendation. We build on all three and pick per project.

02When do we recommend WordPress?

When the site needs to grow: multiple service pages, location pages, a blog, custom intake forms, or an integration with something specific to your industry. WordPress gives complete control over URL structure, page speed, and markup, which matters for local SEO.

The honest caveat: WordPress needs maintaining. Plugins and core updates are a real ongoing obligation, and an unmaintained WordPress site is a genuine security risk rather than a theoretical one. If nobody — you, us, or anyone — is going to maintain it, do not choose it.

03When do we recommend Shopify?

When you are selling physical products and inventory, payments, shipping and tax are core to the business rather than an afterthought. Shopify handles PCI compliance, hosting, and platform updates, which removes an entire category of risk from your plate.

The trade: less control over URL structure than WordPress, and transaction fees on top of the subscription unless you use Shopify Payments. For a store doing real volume, that is a rounding error against the operational simplicity.

04When do we recommend Squarespace?

When the site is small, the offer is simple, and the person who will edit it is the business owner rather than a marketer. Squarespace is the easiest of the three to maintain personally and has the lowest chance of quietly breaking.

The trade: you will hit the ceiling if you later want granular SEO control, complex forms, or unusual layouts. For a lot of businesses that ceiling is far enough away to be irrelevant.

05Should I use WordPress or Shopify?

If you sell products, Shopify. If you sell services, WordPress. The genuinely difficult case is a business doing both — a clinic with a small retail line, a contractor selling a few parts.

  • Products are the business: Shopify, with content pages built inside it
  • Services are the business, products are incidental: WordPress with WooCommerce, or WordPress plus a simple Shopify buy button
  • Both are material: worth a real conversation rather than a rule of thumb — this is the one case where the wrong pick is expensive to undo
FAQ

Common questions

Can you move my site from one platform to another?

Yes. It is a migration, so it needs redirect mapping and content transfer to protect your rankings, not just a rebuild. Budget for that rather than treating it as a design refresh.

Is WordPress less secure than the others?

Unmaintained WordPress is less secure. Maintained WordPress is fine. The difference is entirely whether updates, backups and monitoring actually happen — which is why we quote hosting and support alongside any WordPress build.

What about Wix, Webflow, or a custom-coded site?

All viable in the right situation. We recommend from the three above because they cover the overwhelming majority of small-business needs and all three have a large enough ecosystem that you are never locked to one vendor for help.

Will I be locked in if I choose one?

You own your content and domain regardless. Moving platforms is always possible; it is just work. Choosing the right one now is mostly about avoiding that work in two years.
